The CDF Instructor
If you would like to conduct your own CDF trainings, the next step is to become a CDF Instructor (CDFI). NCDA CDF Master Trainers conduct these trainings at different times throughout the year in a variety of locations. The 3-day trainings are delivered during an intensive, in-person workshop.
Acceptance into the trainings is not automatic, however. Prospective candidates must first demonstrate that they meet basic criteria in five different categories:
Education and Career Development Experience
Your education and work experience must meet ONE of the following categories:
Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Counseling with:
- Coursework in career development and vocational assessment
- Practicum/internship with major emphasis on career development
- Minimum of 3 years of career development experience as a teacher, trainer, or materials developer or as a provider of career development services (assisting individuals or groups seeking employment with their career planning and employment issues)
Master’s degree in a field such as Human Resources Development, Psychology or Education with:
- 5 years of experience in career development or in delivery of career development services
- Evidence of having attended continuing education courses on career topics in the past 2 years
- Evidence of having presented at a conference, or published an article/book related to career development, or developed training materials related to career development
Bachelor’s degree in a field such as Human Resources Development, Psychology or Education with:
- 5 years of experience in career development or in the delivery of career development services
- Evidence of having attended continuing education courses on career topics in the past 2 years
- Evidence of having presented at a conference, or published an article/book related to career development, or developed training materials related to career development
If you have less education than that described above, you will need to demonstrate that your background, training and experience in career development is so extensive that it gives you similar levels of expertise.
Training Experience
Your training experience must meet ONE of the first three categories plus the fourth category:Have taught career-related counselor education courses at the college or university level, OR...
Have taught career development courses at the college or university level,
OR...
Have conducted broad, in-depth, career development staff training within a corporate, school, or government setting
AND
Have a minimum of 3 years experience teaching/training adults
Commitment
You will need to demonstrate your commitment to career development facilitation by preparing a written statement regarding how you plan to use the CDFI Training to develop and deliver your own CDF Trainings.
Credential/Membership
You will need to demonstrate ongoing professionalism and a willingness to continue learning. Examples include:
- Licenses/certifications related to counseling, career counseling and career development
- Memberships and/or leadership experiences in professional associations focused on counseling, career development, and/or training
- A GCDF credential
Professional Contributions
You must also demonstrate that you have contributed professionally to the field. Examples include:
- Presenting at a conference and/or convention
- Writing an article related to career development and/or education/training
- Developing materials (client, program, training) related to career development
